ABSTRACT:Authorsreporthereinamildelectrochemicalmethodtotransformalcoholsintotheircorrespondingnitrilesbyusingcommerciallyavailablereagents.Thisprotocolacceptssubstrateswithvariousfunctionalgroupsincludingthosethataresusceptibletooxidativedecomposition.Mechanisticstudiesrevealedacriticaliodide-mediatedphosphineelectrochemicaloxidationpathwayleadingtothealkoxyphosphoniumintermediate,followedbynucleophilicsubstitutionbyacyanidenucleophile.Thismethoddemonstratestheuseofelectrochemistryinreplacingazo-typereagentsindirectnucleophilicsubstitutionandhomologationofalcoholsubstrates.
